Can I see the Southern Lights in New Zealand tonight?
Start with the forecast for your location and look for darkness, clear skies and aurora activity together. Southern locations often have better opportunities, but weather can make a nearby spot the more practical choice. Find a broad southern view away from bright lights and check the forecast again before leaving.
Should I use the Stewart Island, Dunedin or Wellington forecast?
Choose the one relevant to your plans, or open a closer local forecast. The three cards show how opportunities differ across New Zealand; they are not interchangeable. Clear skies in Dunedin do not describe Stewart Island, and activity that looks promising in the far south may be less useful from Wellington.
Can I see the Southern Lights from Wellington?
It is possible when activity is strong enough and the local sky is dark and clear. Use Wellington’s own forecast instead of relying on sightings from the South Island. An unobstructed southern horizon is particularly helpful, since a distant display may sit low rather than filling the sky overhead.
Should I change coasts to escape cloud?
Only if a reachable destination has a better local forecast and the trip makes sense for the evening. Check MetService and road conditions before setting off. Coastal cloud can change during a journey, so a nearby opening may be a better option than driving a long way toward a temporary gap.
Where should I look, and do I need a camera?
Look south from somewhere dark with a broad horizon. A camera is useful for picking up faint colour, but a photograph may look brighter than the view with your eyes. Give yourself time to watch and let your eyes adjust; hills, low cloud and direct lighting can hide a weak display.
