Kp bands are magnetic-latitude screening ranges, not probabilities. Cloud, darkness and your view of the horizon still decide whether you can see a display.

What this means for tonight

A dark-sky setting cannot compensate for insufficient activity at this latitude. The park references describe local forecasts, not guaranteed viewing areas or permission to enter after opening hours.

Solar wind / IMF Bz · Fresh · observed 12 Oct, 17:10 UTC

NOAA OVATION is a regional activity model. Bz, light pollution, the auroral oval and safe access also matter.

Check the local sky

Check HungaroMet for cloud, fog and visibility. Lowland mist around Hortobágy and cloud over Bükk can differ even when the national outlook seems similar.

Where to look

A low, open northern horizon matters more than a scenic foreground. Woodland can block it in BĂĽkk, while city glow can obscure faint structure around Budapest.

Choose your next stop

Use a nearby forecast and confirm the site’s access rules. Choose an established accessible viewpoint rather than entering protected land to find darkness.

Aurora forecast questions and answers

Can I see northern lights in Hungary tonight?
Aurora is rare here and generally requires exceptional conditions compared with Arctic destinations. Check current activity and your local sky, but keep expectations modest. A clear night or a high Kp alone does not establish a visible display.
Why compare Bükk, Hortobágy and Budapest?
They illustrate different terrain and lighting: wooded hills, open lowland and a bright city. Their cards help compare local conditions. They are not tonight’s best-spot list, and park references do not confirm after-dark access.
Does a dark-sky park guarantee a better aurora view?
No. Darkness helps only if aurora reaches a useful part of your sky and cloud allows a view. Trees, mist and access restrictions still matter. Confirm permitted hours and routes with the park before planning a visit.
What should I look for from Hungary?
During an unusual event, faint reddish structure may appear toward the north and show more clearly in a camera. Do not judge by colour alone: light reflected from towns onto cloud can create a similar glow.
How should I combine the Kp reading and the weather?
Use Kp as a broad activity clue, then check the current map, source time and HungaroMet forecast. Neither an old storm reading nor a clear cloud map provides a reliable sighting promise on its own.
