Check the live forecast for Bucharest

Kp bands are magnetic-latitude screening ranges, not probabilities. Cloud, darkness and your view of the horizon still decide whether you can see a display.

What this means for tonight

Bucovina is a broad region, not a single observing site. Moving north or uphill does not guarantee a display; a strong storm still needs a clear, dark view from the actual location.

Solar wind / IMF Bz · Fresh · observed 12 Oct, 17:10 UTC

NOAA OVATION is a regional activity model. Bz, light pollution, the auroral oval and safe access also matter.

Check the local sky

Check Romania’s National Meteorological Administration for cloud, fog and warnings. Carpathian terrain and local low cloud can create different conditions from one valley to another.

Where to look

Seek a low northern horizon away from city glow. Hills and buildings can hide faint structure, and reflected urban light can resemble a reddish display in photographs.

Aurora forecast questions and answers

Can I see an aurora in Romania tonight?
Aurora is rare in Romania and should be treated as an unusual strong-activity opportunity. Check local darkness, cloud and the northern view. A European storm alert cannot tell you that your town will have a visible display.
Which reference should I use: Bucovina, Cluj-Napoca or Bucharest?
Choose the one closest to your plans and then open a local forecast. Bucovina is a region with varied terrain, while Cluj-Napoca and Bucharest are urban references. They do not share one weather forecast or form a viewing itinerary.
Should I travel into the mountains for aurora?
Not simply for altitude. Mountains can obscure the horizon and bring cloud or difficult night access. A safe nearby viewpoint with an open northern sky may be more useful than a long drive to unfamiliar higher ground.
Could city lights be mistaken for northern lights?
Yes. Light reflected from a city onto cloud can look pink or red, especially in a processed image. Compare changing structure, direction and current activity. One colourful photograph is not enough to identify an aurora.
What if the activity reading is old but the sky is clear?
Look for a current NOAA reading and check the latest local weather before relying on the earlier value. Clear skies cannot confirm that a storm is still active. If key readings are unavailable, keep the uncertainty visible in your plans.
How can Aurora Hunt help me watch for aurora in Romania?
